STCW is the international convention established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1978 and last updated in 2010 (Manila Amendments). It sets minimum qualification standards for every person working aboard any commercial vessel or cruise ship globally. Without valid STCW certification, you simply cannot be employed on any cruise ship in the world — regardless of your degree or experience. It is your international maritime passport.
Every major cruise line — Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Carnival, Costa, Disney Cruise Line — mandates STCW Basic Safety Training before boarding. Maa Gange Institute integrates all STCW basic certification modules within our Cruise Ship Management course, so you graduate both degree-qualified AND ship-ready. Our team also guides you through the MCA/DG Shipping documentation process.

Maa Gange Institute changed my life. Within 6 months of completing the course, I was on board a Royal Caribbean ship as a Guest Relations Officer. The STCW training they provided was thorough and the faculty guided me through every step of the documentation process.
I came from a small town in Uttarakhand with no industry connections. Maa Gange Institute gave me the skills, the STCW certification, and the confidence to clear multiple cruise line interviews. I'm now working with MSC Cruises and travelling the world.
The STCW module at Maa Gange is what sets them apart. Other institutes just give you theory, but here we did live fire drills, lifeboat simulations, and first aid practice. When I got on the ship, I was the most prepared among new joiners from across India.
Yes, absolutely. STCW Basic Safety Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR) is a mandatory international requirement for every seafarer regardless of their role — whether you are in housekeeping, food & beverage, guest relations, or entertainment. Without valid STCW certificates, no cruise line will hire you. Maa Gange Institute includes all STCW basic modules within the Cruise Ship Management course.
You need to have passed your 10+2 (Higher Secondary) from any recognised board to enrol in our Diploma in Cruise Ship Management. For the Certificate programme, Class 10 (SSC) pass is sufficient. English proficiency is important as cruise ships operate in a multinational environment.
Most of our students receive their first contract within 3–6 months of completing the course, provided all STCW certificates and documentation (Indos number, CDC, medical fitness) are in order. Our dedicated placement cell conducts regular recruitment drives with cruise line agents throughout the year.
Yes. Because you are working in international waters for most of the contract period, cruise ship salaries are generally tax-free for Indian seafarers under the IT Act (subject to NRI rules). Additionally, food, accommodation, and travel are provided by the cruise line, so your entire salary is effectively savings — making even entry-level positions financially very attractive.
Cruise ship contracts typically run for 4–9 months, followed by an equal period of leave at home. On board, you work 7 days a week during the contract with typically 10–12 hour shifts. However, the experience of visiting multiple countries, earning tax-free in USD, and having zero living expenses makes this schedule very rewarding for most professionals.
Absolutely. Cruise ships actively recruit women across all departments — guest relations, spa & wellness, retail, youth programs, housekeeping, entertainment, and food & beverage. Many of our successful alumni are women currently working with top cruise lines. Maa Gange Institute welcomes all students regardless of gender and provides a safe, supportive learning environment.
